Municipal Composting

Penn State Cooperative Extension is cooperating with PA DEP and the Organics Council within Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP) in efforts to provide training and information on commercial-scale composting for operators of municipal and private composting facilities.

As part of PROP's overall certification program for professional recyclers, a specialization certification in composting is now available. The overall composting specialization training program was largely developed by Mr. Cary Oshens (in the white hat in the photo below).

The basic course in this specialization, Composting - The Practical Science, has been offered every year since 2002. Photos below are from the training sessions held in Allentown with field experience at the Lehigh County Composting Facility, and in Allegheny County with field experience at an AgRecycle composting facility.
