Manufactured Soils Workshop

A hands-on, practical, in the field, one day workshop for anyone who produces or uses topsoil.
Designed particularly for:

  • Soil Blenders and topsoil suppliers
  • Landscape and nursery industry
  • Composters
  • Suppliers of blended soil components

At this workshop you will receive practical, useful information about how soils function and key characteristics for various soil uses. From this teaching and hands-on experience you will learn how to:

  • Blend high quality manufactured soil for athletic fields, residential lawns, nursery beds and more
  • Assess various possible materials for use as components of blended soils
  • Determine what ratios to blend for different soil uses and markets
  • Test and evaluate the quality of your blended soil products

The workshop will be held at Agrecycle’s composting facility near Washington, PA. and will include:

  • Teaching and practical advice from three Penn State University Soil Science faculty members and Agrecycle personnel.
  • Tour of the composting facility.
  • Workshop participants will be assigned the task of blending a soil for a particular use. Participants will select ingredients from among several stockpiled components, determine blending ratios, and assess the quality of the soil they produced.
